How Drug Rehab Centers Use Evidence-Based Approaches to Treat Addicts

Some treatment centers provide specialized therapy sessions through the use of specially designed therapy techniques or modalities. These could be tailored for anger management, stress management, trauma experiences, or even grief counseling; offering coping techniques to help improve your ability to handle issues in a controlled manner rather than feeling the need to use drugs or alcohol.

In addition to therapy, treatment centers may also host speakers who share their own stories, offering residents a sense of hope for their future. Sometimes, the speakers delve into practical issues like rebuilding careers post-treatment, or simply offer inspirational speeches to help lift spirits. Many celebrities and politicians have been known to spend their time providing hope and motivation to those seeking recovery. Other times, it may be past residents who have maintained their recovery and wish to share with others what worked for them.

How Drug Rehab Centers Work for Addicts

Life in rehab is very structured. Each day is filled with activities and therapies to eliminate boredom and downtime during which clients may be tempted to relapse to drug or alcohol use. By learning a new way to live with a new schedule, a person can avoid reverting to old tendencies that could threaten their recovery. Strict structure can also distract clients from any cravings they may experience related to their drug of choice. In rehab, there is some personal time available between meals, activities, and therapy sessions, but much of the day is planned out for clients.

Drug and alcohol rehab centers are structured treatment programs aimed at helping those struggling with addiction. Substance use disorders (SUDs) are complex problems and there are various types of treatment programs available to help.1 Rehab can help those with SUDs work toward a healthy, happy, and sober lifestyle.

Many individuals seeking treatment travel to a rehab facility away from their homes. This is beneficial in some cases because it removes users from a home environment where they previously used drugs or alcohol.

With physical distance placed between themselves and a potentially-triggering and/or otherwise stressful environment, those attending rehab may be more able to fully focus on their addiction issues, free of outside distractions or temptations from work, family, and friends.

In the event that you have heavy work demands and need to maintain an active involvement at your place of employment, executive rehab centers may facilitate you maintaining a presence or ongoing involvement at work while undergoing residential treatment in a luxurious, 24-hour care setting.

Finally, outpatient programs provide another treatment possibility for anyone who is unable take time away from home or work and who may need a more affordable option than executive rehab. Those struggling with severe addiction or relapse problems, however, would be well served in searching for residential treatment options that can offer more intensive 24-hour care.

Inpatient facilities are rehab centers that offer 24-hour care from staff personnel.1 Hospital-based inpatient services have medical staff members present at all times and, though many residential rehabs have on-staff medical professionals present throughout the day, they can make arrangements for additional medical attention, when needed. Both types of inpatient rehab centers require patients to live at the facility.

An important early part of many addiction rehab efforts is detox. During detox, the body rids itself of the toxic influences of drugs or alcohol.1,2, While the detox experience will vary greatly based on the specific type and frequency of substance used, many substance withdrawal syndromes can be unpleasant, if not dangerous.1,2,4 Proper treatment in a medically supervised detox program can alleviate the discomfort and mitigate some of the risks associated with withdrawal.

As a person progresses with recovery and nears the end of a rehab treatment program, staff will work with the patient to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. This may include some combination of support groups, ongoing therapy, and sober living arrangements, if needed.

Luxury rehabilitation offers far more amenities and posh surroundings than standard rehab facilities. They are often located in secluded areas, so patients are afforded maximum privacy during their stays. Compared to more standard rehab programs, luxury rehab centers may be more likely to offer certain complementary services and innovative recovery therapies in addition to wellness activities and upscale offerings like gourmet meals prepared by professional chefs.

Data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2020-2021, estimate that an average of 265 Americans died each day from a drug overdose.3 While addiction and substance abuse are undoubtedly major problems in the United States, a survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that as many as 90 percent of people who need drug rehab do not receive it.4 With such a desperate need for solutions, what results can be expected from treatment? What are rehab success rates and statistics?

Spontaneous remission from drug or alcohol addiction refers to the the phenomenon where an individual with a substance use disorder (SUD) stops using drugs or alcohol without any formal treatment or forced rehab. Yet the research behind this occurrence is largely inconclusive because of the limits of the data available.9

Outside of a personal support system, there are a number of ways individuals can foster their recovery efforts, including:\n\nContinuing ongoing individual, group, or family therapy.\nScheduling regular check-ups with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare providers instrumental in the recovery efforts.\nAttending peer groups in the long-term support community, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or SMART Recovery.\nParticipating in the aftercare programming and\/or educational opportunities provided by the treatment center.\nFinding new, healthy ways to occupy time, which many include volunteering, starting a new hobby, staying active, or going to the movies.\n\n\n"}Furthermore, many treatment centers and facilities offer alumni programs that allow program graduates to stay involved. Alumni programs provide accountability and let individuals remain as part of the supportive recovery community. Rehabs with alumni networks typically connect individuals with this resource while they are still in treatment so they are already part of the community when formal treatment ends.

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, known as CARF, is a nonprofit organization that offers accreditation of rehabilitation and behavioral health centers. In order to receive a CARF accreditation, facilities must meet a variety of requirements. A CARF-accredited facility demonstrates high-quality programming and treatment that is tailored to the individual.

Some clients feel so overwhelmed by withdrawal that they want to give up. Helping a client see the value of treatment and see a path to a better life is one of the biggest challenges of working in rehab. Clinicians must develop a close and trusting relationship with each client. This relationship offers insight into the unique motivators that can help each client stick with treatment.

Working at a drug rehab center can be a rewarding career that opens doors to other opportunities. Some clinicians eventually become administrators, while others publish research based on their work or go on to teach at colleges and universities. For early-career professionals, rehab offers access to clients with a wide variety of needs and challenges. This breadth and depth of experience can be difficult to obtain in private practice.

The work can also be emotionally demanding, and not all clients thrive or even survive. Mental health professionals should practice self-care, seek support from loved ones, and consider attending therapy to cope with the ups and downs of life as a rehab worker.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, between 40 and 60% of addicts will relapse at least once. Drug rehab centers have helped thousands of people in the U.S. recover from drug and alcohol use disorders. Trying to fight addiction on your own can be difficult, scary, and risky without the medical care and support available at a drug rehab center.

Statistics on the drug rehab success rate in the U.S. are relatively high even though the country is currently suffering a nationwide opioid crisis. Drug rehab centers use a range of evidence-based treatments that can be personalized in ways that help all patients recover safely from addiction.

Outpatient drug rehab programs allow for more flexibility and freedom than inpatient and residential programs. These programs usually meet for an average of 10 hours per week during the day or at night so you can continue managing your work, school, and family life while continuing to receive addiction treatment.

Therapies included in an outpatient drug rehab program are the same as those included in residential programs, but are often far less intensive. Individual and group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dual diagnosis therapy, family therapy, 12-step support groups, and recreational therapy are just some therapies you or your loved one may receive in an outpatient drug rehab program.

Compared to inpatient and partial hospitalization programs, outpatient drug rehab programs are generally lower in cost and more affordable. Programs can last anywhere between three months to over one year and allow you to maintain your normal daily routine in the community. 2ff7e9595c
